One of the beautiful things about the psychotherapy field is that it's constantly learning and growing. The creative arts therapies (and dramatherapy, by extension) are relatively new in the grand scheme of psychological studies, which means that we are expanding exponentially in our understanding of how to use the craft, and new tools are popping up every day! For the next couple weeks, we're updating our material to reflect all the most cutting edge and innovative tools being used. We appreciate your patience while we do this. In the meantime, here's an oldie but a goodie!
"Take a deep breath"
Wow, haven't we all heard that one before? And maybe you've even tried it and it hasn't really worked that well (or maybe it has!). Here's the deal. Breathing is super important for our nervous system and helps our body know how safe we are at any given moment, but a common misconception about breathwork is that it's about getting more oxygen in. Not to bash on oxygen, but it's actually the exhale of carbon dioxide that is most important to this process when you're trying to calm yourself down. So here's one way to do it. and do three of them in a row because one is just not enough.
Inhale slowly through your nose. I like to do a count of three because it keeps me nice and even. Then you are going to exhale as hard as you can out your mouth. Bonus points if you make a lot of noise when you exhale (I'm talking either the out breath is so big that it's loud OR you choose to do a big vocalisation).
